The English Language Arts department at Estrella High School is dedicated to developing students' reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Our comprehensive curriculum prepares students for academic success, career readiness, and lifelong learning through engaging literature, analytical writing, and meaningful discussions.
We believe that strong literacy skills are the foundation for success in all areas of life. Our teachers use research-based instructional strategies and diverse texts to meet students where they are and help them grow as readers and writers.
Close reading of diverse texts including classic literature, contemporary works, poetry, drama, and informational texts.
Argumentative, informative, and narrative writing with focus on the writing process, research skills, and effective communication.
Collaborative discussions, presentations, and active listening skills for academic and professional settings.
Grammar, vocabulary development, and language conventions to support clear and effective communication.
Foundation course building essential reading and writing skills through diverse literary genres and informational texts. Focus on analytical reading, argumentative writing, and vocabulary development.
Continued development of literacy skills with emphasis on world literature, research writing, and critical analysis. Students explore themes across cultures and time periods.
American Literature focus with exploration of foundational American texts, rhetorical analysis, and persuasive writing. Preparation for college-level reading and writing.
Capstone course focusing on British Literature, advanced composition, and career/college readiness. Students complete a senior research project and refine their communication skills.
Explore various forms of creative expression including poetry, short fiction, personal narrative, and screenwriting. Students develop their unique voice and participate in writing workshops.
Learn the fundamentals of news writing, interviewing, and media literacy. Students contribute to school publications and explore careers in media and communications.
